Sunburn on a new tattoo

I have a question about the tattoo I got 3 days ago.

First off, I made a huge mistake, and got a bad sunburn on the shoulder my tattoo is on (was standing in a parking lot talking to someone at my car). Unforunately we were standing there for longer than I intended. Other than this I had been taking care of it very well.

That was yesterday. Today when I woke up and went to put ointment on it, I noticed that some flakes of colored skin came off. My tattoo is a cross that goes through the skin, and is all black except for the blood coming out of the bottom, which is obviously red. The red is where this is happening the most. Flakes of red skin are coming off, leaving a slightly duller red where they came off at.

Is this a normal part of the tattoo healing process, or is it a problem caused by the sunburn. I've been keeping it very 'lubed' up ever since i got the sunburn.

In short my question is this: Is it normal for red flakes of skin (some of the black outline is in it as well) to be coming off, or is this a bad thing? Thanks.

your tattoo will scab over two times, it is absolutely normal for the skin to flake off and the color of the tattoo to be a slightly duller color than at first. Don't sweat it , but you better put sunblock on that ink from now on!!!

Take care of your tattoo now, shy away from the sun... After +/- 45 days healing should be complete... If you notice any problem go to your tattooist and tell what happened.

I just had this happen yesterday i went to the pool and made sure i didnt get it wet at all so my shoulder was out of the water and it being March in Montana i didnt even think of getting a sunburn but it happened i hope i dont have any problems i have been putting on unscented lotion but its buring
