I know that petrolem jelly helps with the pain and for the ink to stay ... but I find it so difficult to do the three-finger stretch (which is crucial for a tattoo) because it's slippery ... what do I do? Also, howcome my stencils don't stay on he kin? they smudge at the slightest touch. I've tried using green soap, but it doesn't show up, when I use deoderant all the carbon from the stencil is pulled from the paper onto the skin, but it jus doen't stay, any suggestions? Thanks a lot, I appreciate your help!!

don't put on too much jelly before you start. i usually apply a thin layer and wipe it with tissue afterwards, that seems to be enough.
i use dettol to apply the stencil, put it on, leave it to dry for a few minutes and it wont come off no matter how hard you rub it. but i understand that dettol can be a bit hard to get in some places. i first tried it with green soap too and that just didnt stay on, maybe coz the soap coats the skin and the stencil is on top of that.

After green soaping the area, I use Hibiclens dabbed on and then apply the stencil. After applying the stencil, I lightly dab the stencil, and rub a thin coat of vaseline over it, (doesn't affect the stencil at all), and after running a line, I dab the ink lightly, (there should be very little of it), and it comes right up. As far as stretching the skin goes, I'd just pull it where you can.

Are you using carbon copy paper? It sounds like you are from your post. If so get some spirit sheets. They are pretty cheap and are really the best for stenciling. Carbon is too messy, especially when scribing plastic for the stencil.

I just wipe down the skin with alcohol, then speed stick, and apply stencil. Let it dry for a few minutes, and it's on solid. I usually smear a really thin coat of vaseline on after I make a line, to ease the wipe, but I don't leave enough on after to hinder the stretch.

I do mine almost exactly like Mark above, but I trace my stencil outline with a surgical marker. Seems to really stay on after drying a few minutes.

it seems like theres a million differant solutions to stencil problems. differant people prefer differant methods. myself i prep the skin with med grade anti bacterial soap. then l wash the area completly with dettol wipe it clean so that the skin is moist and tacky then apply the stencil. i find its important to let the area dry completly before i start tattooing, i usually place a glob of vaseline off to the side of the area im tattooing rather than lube up the whole thing. just dab a fingers worth on the area that your working on this might help with your slipping fingers when your trying to stretch the skin.if you start loosing the stencil image trace the lines with a skin scribe or light colered sharpie(dont re-use it).i hate to say it but the whole speed stick thing is kind of unsanitary but like i said differant strokes for differant folks.....

i shave a sliver off the speedstick after using it.i used dr technors peppermint mouthwash one time and it worked great but heres my current procedure..green soap prep...stencil is on a spirit master sheet..speed stick 1st, apply stencil next, thin coat of a&d,and i actually have too much of the stencil left after i line the tattoo up and have to rub some of it off with alcohol(ouch)too inspect my lines.

I never use petroleum I just squirt an A&D packet onto somewhere near the tattoo and dab from there. As far as stencil application goes I wet the skin with greensoap, shave it then wet it again and apply the stencil. After the stencil is applied I pat it dry with a paper towel and rub a thin layer of A&D into it and wipe that off then proceed to set up for the tattoo to give it a minute to dry. I don't like using speedstick because some people have sensitive skin and deodorant doesn't dry as fast as greensoap.

I remember reading on another forum about melting chunks of speed stick into some green soap and spraying in on for the stencil app. Don't know how it works, but thought I'd add it to the list. I hear dettol work really well.

Only thing with Dettol is that I've heard once you put the stencil on, it's on! Really hard to remove.

One guy I know who works at a shop around here swears that pine-sol works (I'm not kidding either) I was kind of apalled that he used pine-sol on peoples skin and told him so but all he had to say was "hey,it's antibacterial!" LOL
